Photos & Notes: Kraddy @ El Rey Theatre, July 16, 2011

Kraddy

It may have been Carmageddon this weekend, but The Do LaB dubbed their dubstep event at the El Rey on Saturday, July 16: KRADDYgeddon.

Bass heavy and with a blinding kaleidoscope of stage lights, electronic music producer Kraddy stood high above the crowd, flanked by two electro-glowing towers, raising his arms with every peak of sound like a hype conductor. His lone live one-man orchestra, drummer Drew Marcogliese, banged away on a clear drumkit in front of Kraddy’s perch.

Carmageddon was basically an over-hyped dud in terms of traffic tie-ups, but former Glitch Mobber Kraddy drew out all the EDC runoff and dubsteppers either by car or bike or bus (foot? Nah, nobody walks in LA). The promoters were sweet enough to offer half-price tickets to anyone riding their bike to the event.

Little Dragon: Live @ Apogee Studios + New Album Pre-Release Stream

In late May, Ron and I turned out to Apogee’s Berkeley Street Studios for a live KCRW Little Dragon taping, engineered by Bob Clearmountain and rounded out by the obligatory Garth Trinidad Q&A with the band. That fine show aired on MBE yesterday morning and can be streamed right here, right now.

While we’re on the subject of Little Dragon, KCRW is also hosting a free stream of their new album Ritual Union through August 17, right here. The album drops July 26. Enjoy.

“David Bowie: Starman”–New Biography Out Today

David Bowie: Starman

You can tell straight away that David Bowie: Starman, out today in a U.S. edition hardcover and digital from Little, Brown and Co., is the real deal. Author Paul Tyrka is a former editor of MOJO and it is clear his detailed, lucid prose was a guiding influence on that magazine’s late 90’s/early 00’s halcyon days. He weaves annotated reportage, first hand anecdotes, academic insight and plain old fashioned fandom, all while minimizing judgment–no mean feat when it comes to the life of David Bowie. This one’s a keeper for the rock bios shelf in the home library.
